New Basler Network Camera Model with IMX174 Sensor Pushes Traffic Imaging to a New Level

Basler has now equipped an IP camera model with the Sony IMX 174 sensor. The BIP2-1920-25c is particularly suitable for ITS applications, and has been available from Q1/2015. It offers full HD resolution and modern global shutter technology including real-time trigger for compressed and uncompressed images (YUV).

Outstanding Sony IMX 174 Sensor for Excellent Traffic Images

The Sony IMX174 sensor is currently considered one of the top sensors in the market. It combines high frame rates, outstanding sensitivity and excellent image quality. Its noise behavior is unmatched even by common CCD sensors. The Sony IMX174’s superior sensitivity goes hand in hand with a dynamic range that has never been seen before in traffic cameras. This combination reduces the issue of over-exposed license plates – a frequent cause of concern, especially in tolling and red light enforcement applications – by balancing the bright and dark areas in an image. This is a major achievement in the changing light conditions faced by many ITS applications.

The dynamic range enables a very good imaging result of bright and dark areas, such as when the license plate is light, and the driver is sitting in the dark. This becomes possible by just one shot / exposure, without the need to set up a time-related averaging over several images. The latter approach uses ordinary IP cameras and leads to motion blur, which greatly limits the utility for ANPR and for clear images, or even makes the images unusable.

Sony IMX174 Sensor also Available on the ace Series

Next to this upcoming network camera model, Basler also offers industrial area scan cameras with the IMX174 sensor: the ace GigE cameras acA1920-50gm and acA1920-50gc as well as the ace USB 3.0 models acA1920-155um and acA1920-155uc.
