What is Time of Flight?

Industrial image processing based on 2D image data works very well for inspection tasks on flat surfaces with a reasonable degree of contrast. Even so, 3D camera systems are increasingly being used to open up completely new applications, with an eye towards ever-rising degrees of automation. Examples of this include robot applications, tracking of persons, the film industry, bin picking and logistics automation.

One measurement principle of 3D cameras is the Time-of-Flight technique, which measures distances based on the time it takes for light to travel. How precisely does this kind of Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera work? Which benefits does it offer and what influencing factors should be considered by the user?

Basler current Vision Campus video gives answers to this and other questions.
